After some delays, I have opened up a shop on Etsy. I will be primarily selling jewelry, art, and other non-prop items. But if you have a special request for any of my projects that are not listed on there, then please let me know!
Currently I only have listed my base stock – A series of laser cut acrylic jewelry designs inspired by Half-Life 2. I will be adding more designs in the future, to be sure you check back!
So I’ve been out of the game design scene a little bit, and I thought I should post here to let everyone know why and what I’ve been up to.
For those of you who don’t know, I have been into costuming/cosplay and prop building for a number of years now. This hobby took a back seat for a few years as my friends who were into that scene kind of fell away one by one. But last summer I decided to dive back into it with a renewed sense of interest.
The past few months I have been working on a Gravity Gun prop build, and I have a few other Half-Life props that are brewing in the background. I also made a War Machine costume from Iron Man 2 last summer, and again have some similar things up and coming.
Frankly, I had a few things happen to me earlier this year that really burned me out of game design. I feel like I need to let my creativity simmer in that area, because I do have some ideas and a few people I am excited about working with.
But for the time being, you can follow my new prop and costuming blog, Overworld Designs.
I originally posted this at ThinkingWithPortals.com, the Portal / Portal 2 community that I operate. I posted it in response to the fairly common complaint that our community standards are “too high” and that we “ridicule” less skilled mappers. Read on for the full rant in it’s entirety copied straight from the site.
I just went back through my blog posts to clean some things up – moving to WordPress has actually been pretty not terrible! – and I came to realize something. For someone who loves games as much as me, I sure do not talk about them a whole lot here! Granted, this site used to be an update page for a number of other network sites that I am running / used to run, so there’s a lot of random notes about that stuff.
But I think I’m going to try and start posting more often about my own projects. Wish me luck!
2:52 AM - msleeper: I'm recompiling all of my Source maps for my portfolio and I am reminded of a four letter word from game design 101:
2:53 AM - msleeper: FUCK
2:53 AM - msleeper: as in FUCK i don't have anything installed
2:53 AM - msleeper: then FUCK it will take 3 hours to download hl2 and episode 2
2:53 AM - msleeper: and of course FUCK i have to sit here for 30 minutes for this shitty map to compile
2:53 AM - MrTwoVideoCards: lol
Much to my amazement, Gamespy has ran an article about my Achievement crap to which I ask the question, who still reads them? Don’t get me wrong, I still have a site hosted over at Gamespy, but I thought their boat sailed long ago. Didn’t you guys Hoover up quality sites like DailyRadar only to crash the proverbial Titantic into an iceberg named “Over Advertisements”?
When you are done slanging your opinon about my Achievement honeypot, feel free to check out the super rad Left 4 Dead Co-op Stats plugin that I wrote a month or so ago. I am still working on a Versus mode stats for it, but I haven’t had a ton of time to work on it. I’d like to maybe get Versus done in a month or so, but no promises.
Also, I may or may not be rewriting The Hunted Mod for TF2 and finishing up the vip_hunted remake. I may or may not be doing a lot of things these days it seems.
Oh, I also haven’t pimped MyPHPsig in a while. If you are a forum nut like I know I am, you should check it out.
I have setup an achievement server for Team Fortress 2. Like most achievement servers, this server is running a farming map – achievement_scout – to attract people looking to cheat their way out of earning achievements the real way. Unlike other achievement servers, this server is running a honeypot plugin. For anyone unfamiliar with what a honeypot is, feel free to read this article on Wikipedia to get an idea.
By joining this server, and earning a single achievement, you show that you are willing to ruin the game for personal gain. And for that, you can welcome yourself to my banlist which is publicly available here:
Team Fortress 2 Achievement Farmers
I have heard plenty of incessant bitching from farmers and people who think there is “nothing wrong with farming”, and you are wrong. There is everything wrong with farming because it is ruining the integrity of the game, the purpose of achievements. My favorite argument is, “It’s better than people farming them in real games,” to which I say, why farm them at all? You shouldn’t FARM them, you should EARN them.
I could go on for pages about this, and I already have. Just google and I’m sure you’ll find it.
